Tuesday night – Shelley & Peggy and I went off to support Paul Freeman at the Troubadour, but first – we met up with Patrick at Dan Tana’s – my first time there – and it was pretty pretty good. Dan Tana’s is a old school Italian restaurant that’s been a Hollywood Hangout for over 40 years. It kind of slides between sort of young casual and old uptight, with variations on that theme… but our waiter was very cool, and the food we ordered was very good. Parmigiana, escargot, warm bread, salad, pasta… no desserts for us though, as we slipped next door to say hello to Paul and watch the opening band – Johnnie Newman (and his band) who we weren’t too sure of at first, but the humour and the dramatic 70’s rock stylings kind of won us over in the end. That, and his references to the Misfits -
Then Paul and his band took the stage, and the crowd was small, but into it. It was an early Tuesday night, and it was actually nice to be at the club when it wasn’t overflowing with hipsters… and I cannot wait until the day when I’m on that stage… one day… one day.
Paul was good – very confident, great vocals – solid band – He’s definitely comfortable being up on stage and played his part well. The songs are pretty catchy, and fall somewhere between - I guess – Billy Joel, Oasis, and perhaps a little singer songwriter emoting. It’ll be interesting to see if he moves up in the club circuit over the next few months.

After his set, we chatted with him and friends for a little bit – finished up our drinks, said goodbye to Peggy & Patrick, and started to head home – but were sidetracked by the need for some dessert – which we had missed earlier… so we stopped at a Carvel Ice Cream shop which Shelley had noticed earlier – and maybe it’s ’cause I’m Canadian – but i have no idea about this Carvel thing – something from an American 70’s childhood I guess. Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss. Meant nothing to me, but Shelley was excited – and the Triple Chocolate Brownie was pretty darn good.
so then – sweetly satisfied – we headed back home.
